2D shooters were always a staple of the 90`s and the 80`s, with the likes of Contra an even lately Metal Slug helming the genre. Rise and Shine feel like a throwback to these shooters of the old days, with some new mechanics thrown into the mix. The result is a competent and fun game, that while does not last long is a hell of a ride throughout.

The main thing that pops out is the drop-dead gorgeous graphic style of the game. Rise and Shine is so pretty that the graphics alone could be a reason to give it a shot. All the levels, character designs and animations are top notch and the game aces the visual department. The levels are chock full of beautiful vistas and there is a good range of different environments to run around and shoot robots and soldiers in.

Game play-wise, Rise and Shine uses the usual mechanics of its genre with some new ones thrown in: one is being able to control the fired bullet in a limited space of the screen and the other, being able to transform the bullets into grenades that stick to surfaces. These two mechanics are mostly used to solve the various puzzles throughout the game. Overall, the gameplay is pretty competent, with various different enemies with different abilities, and different scenarios to mix up the action and stop it from getting too stale. The game play can get pretty tough at places, but a generous distribution of checkpoints stops it from getting too frustrating.

Apart from some small control issues, the main negative part of the game is its downright nonsensical story. Through the length of Rise and Shine, numerous references to major gaming IP`s are made, from Mario to Flappy Bird. However, the game just can’t decide on its tone. At parts it tries to be a zany and lighthearted adventure, but spends too much time in drawn out cut scenes trying to tell a –at times-grim and dark story. The characters drone on and on through the boring but very well drawn cut scenes. All this effort on the story seems to be waste when the game is this short, barely reaching 4 hours.

In the end, Rise and Shine is a very good game held back by the short length and the useless story. If you can look pass that, a very challenging and beautiful experience awaits you.
